Fall Preschool Activities

Autumn - a time for slowing down and getting ready for the holiday seasons that are coming at you full throttle. The leaves are changing color and Santa is everywhere, even if it is months until Christmas. Fall is a time of change. There are many different angles to think of when teaching the preschoolers about Fall.

Pumpkin pudding can be made in honor of more than one holiday. Let the kids join in with you when you are making the pudding. Here's one of the easier recipes: Beat one 5.1 oz vanilla instant pudding and pie filling mix with on 12 oz. can evaporated milk and refrigerate for five minutes. Add one 15 oz. can pumpkin, one-teaspoon pumpkin pie spice and then mix well. It is ready to server after ten more minutes in the fridge.

Art is always a welcomed activity for the wee ones. Using Fall colored construction paper, paint and playdough you can create leaves that have fallen from the trees, pumpkins, or perhaps scarecrows and turkeys.

A take off of the old Mr. Potato Head is the Mr. Pumpkin Head. Just use small pumpkins and parts from Mr. Potato Head to let the children create their own pumpkin people.

Perhaps your kids would like to make something different for the doors of their homes to greet their guests during the season. Fall Wreaths can be just that something. Using Styrofoam rings available at any craft store; you can stick most anything into them to make the wreath. For instance: acorns, leaves, Fall colored flowers or pine cones.

Fall leaf placemats can be a nice addition to a table. Use black and white templates that the kids can color or paint to personalize for Fall.

Leaf collecting is easy to do while they are all falling from the trees. Have the kids press them and make books out of them if you like.

Singing is loved by many. Pick a song about turkeys, pumpkins or Fall itself to sing with the kids. For instance Saw A Leaf written by Jean Warren to the tune of My Darling Clementine:

Given a leaf

Given a leaf

He saw a leaf fall.

It 'been moved,

There was rotation,

As spun and spun.

He tried to take it,

The attempt to capture,

When it landed on the floor.

But he stopped right in the vortex

As danced on into the city.

Handprint turkeys are easy to get around to doing time at Thanksgiving. Have the children trace their hands with a pencil. The thumb is the beak and the fingers of springturkey. Don't forget to add the feet!

Landscape paintings are beautiful creations from art the preschoolers can enjoy. Just provide them paper and paint and let them loose. Perhaps give them an idea like where is their favorite place to spend Fall.

Pin the leaf on a tree. Played like Pin the Tail on the Donkey. Draw the skeleton of a tree on butcher paper and tack to a wall in the room. Try real leaves or leaves cut from construction paper and have the kids re-leaf the tree.

Colorful, tranquil and always changing is the season of Fall. Bright colors and foreboding skeletons of trees as well as the anticipation of the upcoming holidays fill the air. Teach the preschoolers about change, color, holidays and gatherings - you can't miss! After all, it's all a part of Fall.
